Where else but in West Michigan can we experience 10 minutes of heavy snow in early May then close out the month with 12 days of the most glorious summer weather imaginable with everyday temps in the 80s? Suddenly it’s summer! The weddings, showers, new babies, and vacations we’ve anticipated all winter long are suddenly upon us. The excitement builds.
Other summer activities will be built around the commitments already in place. Carving out time to enjoy our home on the lake, impromptu family gatherings, Sunday concerts on the bluff and simple pleasures like having breakfast on the deck and spending time with friends will get top billing.
Making the most of the summer means seizing the moments—plugging in what matters.
If we’re intentional about improving and enjoying the relationships, skills and activities we value in our lives, they’re not going to happen in our spare time—in five or 15 minutes here or there. We’re going to have to be committed to allocating PRIME time. In order to get good at something significant and set ourselves up for success, we may have to say “no” to activities that take us off course or distract us from what truly matters.
When we’re willing to invest our PRIME time in our most significant relationships we set the wheels in motion for great things to happen. This can be a game changer.
When Jim and I sit down to update our calendars this week, as we do most every Saturday morning, he’ll be blocking out time for golf with his “buddies” from now ‘til Labor Day. We’ll both select one or more dates to visit the Michigan State University Horticulture Gardens.
A few more drawing classes, lunches with friends and periodic visits to the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Grand Rapids Art Museum will be among my PRIME time activities. As important as anything to me is simply leaving time just to “be,” to reflect and resist crowding the days.
Where are the spaces in your summer calendar?
Does everybody in your household get a chance to schedule PRIME time activities? Or has someone decided “it’s all about me?”
Seize the opportunities still available and make this summer one of the best! Make it a game changer!
